How Tantra and John Hawken Changed my Life
I grew up in a very sexually repressed environment. I got the message, not intentionally, that my body was bad and my genitals were worse.
With the result that not only did I not accept my body, but that I had almost no useful information about sex, relationship, and women for the first 30 years of my life.
I knew I had to change something. I didn’t know what to change or how.
One day, while looking through the internet I saw a workshop, “John Hawken, internationally acclaimed tantra teacher is coming to our city for one weekend only.” So, I thought, “maybe this is it.”
I signed up and showed up.
It was amazing. We learned by experience that we are more than just a physical body. I had a theoretical knowledge that our brains and nerves run with electrical impulses, but John introduced us to a very different kind of “energy” which you can feel just by shaking your hands wildly, breathing deeply and vocalizing loudly for 30 seconds, then bringing your hands slowly closer together. This energy is the key to everything from emotions to orgasm, and John showed us how to use and channel this energy for our own self-development.
John explained that the female principle is energy and the male principle is consciousness, and that their dance within us creates both our individual form and our relationship dynamics. He explained how too much energy tends to chaos and too much consciousness tends to rigidity or even death. I wondered if the current state of the world was due to us fixating too singly on the “male principle” of wanting to “understand” and “explain” everything logically, and ignoring the unexplainable feminine characteristics of intuition, emotion, and openness.
Most importantly, tantra changed my life.
After that fist weekend, I walked out of the workshop and felt good about myself. I looked people in the eye wherever I went. I felt energy and love flowing through me. I felt healed.
I found out as I continued that there was a lot more deeper work to do, but tantra provided a safe and playful path to gain ever greater insight into and understanding of my behavioural patterns, emotional makeup, and relationship experiences. It allowed me to deepen my connection to and understanding of myself and sexuality and to make meaningful changes in virtually all aspects of my life.
Thanks to John and tantra, I now can accept and even love my body as my vessel through life. I have overcome much of the shame about myself, and I can see and respond to myself and others in much more powerful, conscious ways than before. Thanks, John!
